Examination of Environmental Law Post-Rio

A new publication has been released examining the development of environmental law in the period since the 1992 Earth Summit. It is divided into five sub-themes and includes expert legal opinion from eminent scholars in the field on develpments to date, engaging with key themes from a broad selection of jurisdictions and perspectives.

Australia Environmental Law Council

The Environmental and Planning Law Group of the Law Council of Australia is holding its 2nd Environmental Law Symposium in Sydney (Australia) on Friday 25 November titled: "The Future of Environmental Law". The occasion will also honor the contribution that Emeritus Professor Ben Boer and Professor Robert Fowler have made, and continue to make, in both Australia and internationally to the study and teaching of environmental law.
The title of the Symposium is designed to provoke some discussion about the directions and value of environmental law as the 20th anniversary of the Rio Declaration and the 20th anniversary of the Framework Convention on Climate Change draw near, as well as what the next 20 years holds for society and the planet

Five sessions during the Symposium will address the themes in the following areas:
- Land;
- Air;
- Water;
- Energy; and
- Courts and Institutions.

Expressions of interest, abstracts, and a short CV are sought from speakers for each of the sessions. The information should be sent to matthewbaird@wentworthchambers.com.au by no later than 15 August 2011. Speakers will be advised by 30 August 2011. Final papers to be provided by 15 November 2011.

UN Regional Commissions: Decent Work and Sustainable Development

Senior officials of the five UN regional commissions met on 14 June to analyze the importance of decent work in the context of greener and more sustainable globalization, as part of the 100th Session of the International Labour Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

In his presentation, Antonio Prado, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) underlined the importance of reaching agreement so that developed countries may meet their financial and technology transfer commitments, with the aim of encouraging sustainable development and achieving a new low-carbon world economy, in accordance with Principle 9 of the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development.
