Outcomes: Biosafety COP/MOP-6

Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (COP/MOP 6) adopted 16 decisions, including a decision initiating activities to provide a basis for future substantive work in regard to socio-economic impacts of living modified organisms.

Cartagena Protocol: National Reports

The CBD Secretariat has has released the second national reports on implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, as well as an interactive tool for information search and analysis of the reports. According to a notification, the Secretariat has received 124 reports to date, which are made available through the "Finding Information" section of the Biosafety Clearing House (BCH).

Cartagena Protocol Compliance

The CBD Secretariat has released the report of the 8th meeting of the Compliance Committee under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.

Liability and Redress in Africa

The CBD Secretariat has released a report of the African Regional Workshop on the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. In their conclusions, participants, inter alia: - accepted a suggestion by the African Union (AU) Commission to formulate guidelines and strategies to support African countries in putting legal frameworks on liability and redress into place;
- noted the African Model Law on Biosafety as as one possible source of information for the development of regulatory frameworks;
- agreed to initiate implementation by reviewing existing domestic laws; and
- considered the usefulness of a harmonized approach with regard to determining damage to biodiversity, measuring biodiversity loss, techniques for biodiversity valuation and strategies to control the transboundary movements of living modified organisms (LMOs).

COP/MOP-6 of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety will be held from 1-5 October 2012, in Hyderabad (India)

The provisional agenda includes the following items:
- report of the compliance committee;
- operation and activities of the Biosafety Clearing-House;
- matters related to the financial mechanism and resources;
- cooperation with other organizations, conventions and initiatives;
- and report of the Executive Secretary.

Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol: Signatures

15 countries and the European Union (EU) signed the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety at a signing ceremony held during the High-level Segment of CSD-19.

The total number of signatures received to date is now 22. The countries that signed during the ceremony are: Austria, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Montenegro, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland, Tunisia and the EU.

The Supplementary Protocol will remain open for signature at UN/HQ until 6 March 2012. During this time, States can sign the Supplementary Protocol on any day. Another special signing event will be organized on 20 September 2011in conjunction with the High Level Event on Desertification of the UN/GA's 66th session.

Nagoay-Kuala Lumpur Protocol Opens for Signature

Colombia, Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden signed the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Supplementary Protocol on Liability and Redress to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety as it opened for signature at UN/HQ on 7 March. Press Release
